The Workplace Charging Scheme or WCS is a voucher-based scheme designed to provide eligible applicants with support towards the up front costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints.
The contribution is limited to £300 for each socket up to a maximum of 20 across all sites for each application. As in most cases VAT will be reclaimed at cost £300 is the nett value per station - £6,000 maximum.
Charging an electric vehicle from flat to full typically costs from £4 to £10 and will provide energy for a range of about 200 miles. This cost falls further if EV charging solutions utilise green energy from an on site solar PV installation so the payback term is very attractive particularly if vehicles are charged overnight at reduced tariffs.
Adding solar car parking bays into the mix results in further benefits including significant carbon saving.
Vehicles can be used for energy storage and additional battery backup can be built in to the installation. Government financed renewable energy schemes have a history of being terminated at short notice so sooner-the-better is the watchword in this instance.
The scheme has a number of caveats and attention has to be paid to the details to obtain the vouchers on the right timescale to support the installation. Installers have to use a suitable application form to arrange for funding.
